BIOGRAPHY

Francesco De Molfetta was born in Milan in 1979, where he lives and works. After graduating from art high school, he attended the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures while also earning a diploma in theatre directing. Since then, he has taught theatrical workshop and mime. His work, discovered by the renowned Arte Povera gallerist Franco Toselli, has been exhibited in Italy and abroad at all the major art fairs since the late 1990s, including Miart, Artissima, Artforum Berlin, Arco Madrid, Vienna Art Fair, Artefiera Bologna, ArtVerona, and GrandArt.

In 2000, he collaborated with Artedamangiare-mangiarearte by creating an installation for Macef and received a special mention at the Trofeo Brera. That same year, he won the competition organized by the city of Biella, taking part in an exhibition promoted by the Fondazione Pistoletto. He also designed and produced a line of sculptural lamps for interior design.

In 2010, he gained major recognition through his provocative work at the Sacred Art Biennale with the sculpture “Lourdes Vuitton” — a Madonna wearing a Louis Vuitton dress — and with the opening of his first museum room in Vitoria, in the Basque Country. In 2012, he participated in the Biennale di Tolentino curated by Luca Beatrice.

In December 2013, he was invited to exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art in a show dedicated to the New Pop and Surrealist art scene. In 2017, he was given a solo room exhibition at the Triennale Milano Museum.

Internationally, his works have been exhibited in a major exhibition on Western contemporary art at the Tokyo Koyama Gallery in Tokyo, at the Museum of Fine Arts of Besançon in France, and at the T20 Arte Contemporanea Gallery in Murcia, Spain.

As a filmmaker, Francesco De Molfetta directed four short films on celluloid, which are still in distribution today, winning the prestigious Ambrogino d’Oro award and receiving a critics’ mention for the work “The River-run” (Il Corso del Fiume). In theatre, he directed five stage productions, including an assistant directing role at the Piccolo Teatro di Milano alongside Lamberto Pugelli.

He has collaborated with brands such as Nike, Henry Cotton’s, Fender guitars, and Lamborghini.

He teaches Aesthetics of Contemporary Art at the Società Umanitaria in Milan.
