BIOGRAPHY

Marco Tamburro is an artist born in Perugia in 1974, who currently lives and works in Rome.

After earning his diploma at the Art Institute of Perugia, in 1994 he moved to Milan, where he attended the Stage Design course at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. There, he began collaborating with photographers and set designers, developing a strong interest in the theatrical environment. In 1999, he completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, where he started working with numerous theater companies and participated in both group and solo exhibitions.

During this period, his work gradually moved away from the use of photographic cutouts to focus on painting, a medium through which he explores themes related to everyday life, the loss of values, existence, and the human condition. The Roman context, rich in cultural and theatrical stimuli, allowed him to develop a mature painting style, characterized by large areas of black and white interrupted by flashes of red, in which urban rhythm and metropolitan frenzy are transformed into sign and color. The city becomes a symbolic theater: the human figure, reduced to a shadow or puppet, is crushed by the immensity of space, immersed in an alienating reality that Tamburro translates with great expressive force.

In 2019, he founded Factory Studio 8 in Rome, promoting exhibitions and exchanges with international artists. His work has been exhibited in important public and private spaces, including the Civic Museum of Palazzo della Penna in Perugia, Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, MACRO Testaccio – La Pelanda in Rome, Black Square Gallery in Miami, the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Castel dell’Ovo in Naples, the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation in Turin, the Lazio Pavilion at the LIV Venice Biennale, the Galerie an der Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, and the MAXXI – National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome.

His solo exhibitions testify to the evolution of his artistic research, including: Olimpiadi Milano – Cortina 2026 at Niguarda Hospital in Milan; Wall, Tamburro meets Canova at the Antonio Canova Museum Atelier in 2024; Gemelli, curated by Luca Beatrice, at MAXXI in Rome in 2023; Per aspera ad astra, curated by Antonio Zoccoli, at the San Salvatore in Lauro Museums in Rome in 2021; and Quattro mani at the Civic Museum of Palazzo della Penna in Perugia in 2019. Other significant exhibitions include Tracce contemporanee at Villa Vara in Rome in 2016, Acqua at Galleria Restarte in Bologna in 2014, Free Way at Galleria Rossmut in Rome and Sacro e profano at Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence in 2012, as well as international exhibitions such as Urban at Black Square Gallery in Miami in 2011.

Tamburro has participated in numerous important group exhibitions, including Itinerari di Arte e Spiritualità at MIPS – Università La Cattolica in Milan in 2023, Giocare a regola d’arte at MOMUC – Museum of Ceramics in Mondovì, at the Historical Museum Reale Mutua in Turin, and at MAN – Archaeological Museum in Naples in 2022, and Paintings at the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa in 2017. Among international group exhibitions, notable examples include Viva Italia at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg and Dopo la tempesta, la calma at the Lazio Pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 2011, while numerous other exhibitions in Italy have explored themes related to the city, contemporary art, and the relationship between color and form.
